Lee Strong's

Fan Fiction

Lee is regular writer for the National Capital Panthans Journal and The Mucker Magazine, two fanzines produced by local chapters of the Burroughs Bibliophiles, a literary society dedicated to the great American author Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of Tarzan of the Apes, John Carter of Mars, and others. In Lee's alternate histories, he plays freely with Burroughs characters and other folks you may recognize. (For more information on fan clubs and fanzines, check out http://www.tarzan.org/fan_clubs.html)

Invaders of the Inner World (2009) - This 44-page story was originally serialized in the National Capital Panthans Journal in issues #150 through 158 (but not in 154) from April to December of 2009. In 1924, the Soviet Red Army enters Pellucidar through the “Zarovitch Opening” in pursuit of the surviving monarchist White Russian Army and the American adventurer, Edgar Rice Burroughs of Richmond, Virginia. This story relays what befell the Soviet army as well as the tale of a young Soviet rifleman named Kirov, a regular stone age Tom Edison, who introduces several innovations to a tribe he falls in with.

Kirov Skalkiller (2010). This 46-page story was serialized in the National Capital Panthans Journal beginning with #159 in January, 2010, skipping #160, and finishing with #169 in November, 2010. The story is the sequel to 2009’s Invaders of the Inner World and continues the adventures of Kirov among Pellucidar’s strange tribes. Lee Strong gives us a brief history of Pellucidar in chapter 3. He mentions that part of the Earth’s core was explored by Russian Vera Zarovitch in 1865-80. Zarovitch is the protagonist in Mary E. Bradley Lane’s 1880 book about an all-female utopia, Mizora. The young Russian, Kirov, continues to amaze the tribes he tries to protect using his inventions, and he turns the tables on the acting chief of the Dyal Riders with the use of his “magic,” but will Kirov be clever enough to stop the Pulka Horde?

The Wrecker (2009) - This six-page alternative history yarn was published in the National Capital Panthans Journal #154, August 2009. Remember von Horst from the book, Back to the Stone Age? He's the protagonist in this story, and there are iron moles!

Leader of Men (2010) - Originally published in The Mucker Magazine #14, February 2010, this alternative history story shows another use for iron moles. In author Strong's words, "Most of the characters are obscure Burroughs heroes doing their part in the Great War of 1914-18 but some of the characters are, shall we say, also known to non-Burroughs historians.  How many can you recognize?"

Juggernaut (2010) - In this yarn originally published in The Mucker Magazine #15, May 2010, Billy Byrne is just too much for those Germans, although he needs help at the end from an unexpected source. There are many ERB characters in this war story.

Rock, Paper, Scissors (2010) - Published in The Mucker Magazine #16, August 2010,  we learn something about the years before Lieutenant von Horst joined Jason Gridley's rescue mission to Pellucidar, when he spent some time in a French prisoner of war camp. This story reminds us of what can be accomplished with the barest of materials.
